Motor Mechanic

Wallan, Victoria: an established automotive workshop is hiring a Motor Mechanic – Light Vehicle. Expect plenty of European makes and advanced diagnostic gear among the many different vehicles that come through the doors.

The test is simple. Can you prove your trade skills and real workshop time? You need a practical grasp of how vehicle systems work, pinpoint fault diagnosis and repairs done efficiently and safely, all backed by genuine hands-on experience. An experienced mechanic gets to apply what they already know to a range of repair requirements and vehicle technologies. Keep your South African trade certificate, if you have one, with your employment records as evidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle preventative maintenance and routine servicing: engine oil, filters and general service procedures
  • Use modern diagnostic tools to find electrical and mechanical faults, inspecting each system until the cause is clear
  • Work on petrol engines and their related parts, servicing and repairing them
  • Check transmissions and carry out repairs on them
  • Maintain and fix steering, suspension and brakes
  • Pull down engines, gearboxes and other assemblies for inspection, swapping out any damaged, defective or worn parts
  • Follow technical procedures for every repair, with service information and manufacturer specs as your guide
  • Check each car over before work starts and after it is done, then road test it to prove the repair
  • Record jobs and parts accurately
  • Work within the workshop's safety and quality procedures
  • Look after your tools and gear, and keep your bay clean and organised
  • Keep workshop colleagues informed about repairs and vehicle requirements

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Recognised Motor Mechanic – Light Vehicle trade qualification or equivalent
  • Minimum 12 months of relevant automotive workshop experience
  • Light vehicle servicing and repairs: demonstrated, practical experience
  • Working knowledge of today's electrical and mechanical vehicle systems, and strong skill at diagnosing faults and deciding on the right fix
  • Hands-on time with engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension and steering
  • Comfortable reading manufacturer specifications and technical repair information
  • Detail-focused, with strong commitment to dependable workmanship
  • Current driver's licence
  • Efficient in a busy workshop, working solo or with the team, with a positive attitude and professional communication
  • Highly regarded: European vehicle experience. Advantageous: Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, BMW or Mercedes-Benz experience
  • Willing and able to back up your qualifications and employment experience with evidence
  • Able to meet the requirements for the sponsorship on offer
