Australia's 407 Training Visa From 11 March 2026: Get Approvals Sorted Before You Lodge
News · 2026-08-14 · 4 min read
Thinking of training in Australia on a Training visa (subclass 407), or planning to sponsor someone on one? The order in which things get lodged is about to matter a great deal. From 11 March 2026, the old habit of lodging everything at once and letting approvals catch up later stops working.
Below is what changes, why it bites, and the steps to take now rather than later.
One Application at a Time Now
Up to now, a business could start its sponsorship application, its nomination and the trainee's visa application at roughly the same time. Provided the sponsorship and nomination were approved before the visa was granted, nothing went wrong. Things could be sorted out along the way.
That leeway ends on 11 March 2026. From then, a Training visa application only counts as valid if, on the day it is lodged:
- the sponsor is already approved as a temporary activities sponsor, and
- the sponsor already holds an approved Training visa nomination for that particular applicant. Commonwealth agencies do not need the nomination, but they still need sponsor approval.
Lodge too early and you do not just wait longer. The application is treated as never having been valid. The visa application charge is refunded, yet the applicant drops out of the queue completely and must begin again once the approvals land.
The Bridging Visa Trap
The paperwork is not the main danger. The gap in your visa status is. Under the old way, lodging a visa application, even one lodged a bit early, gave the applicant a bridging visa that kept them lawfully in Australia while the rest was finalised. Under the new rules, no valid application means no bridging visa.
So if a trainee's current visa runs out while the sponsor's approvals are still pending, that person may have to leave Australia or rush to find another visa just to stay within their conditions. For sponsors, the weight of the process moves to the front end: getting the sponsorship and nomination lodged and approved, rather than tidying up at the back end.
A Checklist for Trainees
- Put your visa expiry date next to your sponsor's approval timeline. If a gap looks likely, research bridging options or other visas before it catches you.
- Get confirmation from your sponsor that both their temporary activities sponsorship and your nomination are approved before you plan to lodge.
- Never lodge on spec. Under the new rules an invalid application does not keep your place. It sends you back to the start.
If you are applying from South Africa, use any waiting time to prepare. Have certified copies of your qualifications ready, for example signed by a commissioner of oaths, and request a SAPS police clearance if one is asked for.
Steps for Sponsoring Businesses
- Get sponsorship and nomination applications in early, well before the planned training start. Processing takes time, and there is no shortcut once 11 March 2026 arrives.
- Pending is not enough. Only an approved sponsorship and nomination make the visa application that follows valid.
- Plan your training program against current processing times, not against the dates you would have used under the old rules.
Why Canberra Is Tightening This
The change is not red tape for its own sake. It belongs to a wider government push against what has been called permanent temporariness: people stacking one temporary visa on top of another because they do not quite meet the criteria for permanent residence. That pattern has been tied to a risk of exploitation, especially in sponsored categories where a person's right to stay depends on their employer. Requiring the sponsorship and nomination to be locked in before a visa application can even be valid is meant to shut the window where that vulnerability tends to appear.
For genuine training programs run by sponsors who plan ahead, little changes in practice. Early lodgement is simply rewarded. For anyone who leaned on the old lodge now, approve later order as a safety net, that net is gone.
Our Bottom Line
Whether you are a business planning to bring in a trainee or an applicant currently relying on a Training visa, check your timeline now. Do not leave it for February 2026; do it today. Confirm every approval in writing and keep copies of everything.
