Students, Not a Rebound: Making Sense of New Zealand's July 2026 Migration Figures

New Zealand's July 2026 migration data is interesting, but probably not for the reason the headline suggests. If you follow these numbers because you hope to work in New Zealand from South Africa, the detail matters more than the total.
July's Gain and What Drove It
New Zealand recorded a net migration gain of 5,200 in July 2026, more than twice the 2,300 seen in July 2025. A good month. Look underneath, though, and the driver is education rather than a broad migration recovery.
The latest Stats NZ release puts migrant arrivals at 13,900 for July, up 19 percent on a year earlier, while departures fell 7 percent to 8,700. Nearly 2 in 5 of those arrivals held student visas, lining up almost exactly with the start of the second academic semester. Take away that seasonal student boost and the talk of recovery looks a lot less impressive.
The Year-Long View Is Still Thin
Over the 12 months to July 2026, annual net migration reached 20,300, compared with 9,600 the year before. That sounds encouraging until you set it against the long-run average: a typical July year has historically produced a net gain nearer 31,000. Even after this lift, New Zealand sits well below trend.
Foreigners In, Kiwis Out
The 20,300 figure is really two opposite flows netted off against each other:
- +58,700 net gain among non-New Zealand citizens
- -38,300 net loss among New Zealand citizens
So the country is drawing people from abroad while still losing its own. That pattern is not new, but it deserves attention rather than a quick glance.
Across the Tasman, the Old Pattern Returns
In the year to December 2025, New Zealand had a net migration loss of 28,400 people to Australia: 19,100 arrived from Australia, while a much larger 47,500 left for it.
History helps here. Between 2004 and 2013, that loss averaged around 30,000 people a year. It then eased sharply to roughly 3,000 a year between 2014 and 2019. Today's 28,400 sits far nearer the older, heavier era than the calmer years before the pandemic. The pull towards Australia is getting stronger again, not fading.
What It Means If You Are Eyeing New Zealand
For migration agents, education providers and anyone watching New Zealand's population, the message is not that migration is bouncing back. It is that international education is doing most of the heavy lifting right now, while the outflow of citizens to Australia and the gap against long-term averages remain real headwinds. Whether students go on to become long-term residents or simply pass through on temporary visas will decide if this July lift is the start of a trend or a one-semester blip.
For South African workers, the practical move is to watch job ads closely and keep your documents ready. Remember too that some trades, such as electrical and plumbing work, need occupational registration in New Zealand.
