The Job Packs Its Bags: Woolworths New Zealand’s Customer Care Plan Seen From South Africa

News · 2026-09-02 · 4 min read

South Africans know a lot about emigration. Usually it is the worker who packs up and leaves. At Woolworths New Zealand, the opposite is on the table: the jobs are the ones being sent overseas, and a New Zealand redundancy could turn into hiring in Australia.

The Plan and the Dates

The supermarket company has started consultation on closing its Customer Care Centre and moving roughly 130 jobs across the Tasman to Australia. Staff heard about the proposal on September 1. They have until September 15 to give feedback before a final decision is made.

More Than a Call Centre Merger

Businesses pull their support teams into one place all the time, and call centres and back offices are often first in line. The difference here is where the work ends up. It is not moving to another New Zealand city but to a different country. Woolworths built its customers and its profits in New Zealand, and shifting the people who look after those customers offshore changes things for everyone, the staff most of all.

A Small Gain for a Big Business

Workers First Union, which represents the affected staff, says the move is expected to add around NZ$4.1 million in earnings for Woolworths by FY2029. Set that next to the company's own results: NZ$163 million in earnings before interest and tax for the year to June 2026, 8.8% higher than the year before, plus more than NZ$400 million spent on rebranding its stores. Against those figures, the gain looks modest.

Remote Workers and Sole Parents Feel It First

Behind the job count are real people. The union says a large share of the Customer Care team are sole parents who work from home. Many took remote customer-service work because it fits around looking after children. If that job goes, there are few similar roles nearby, and finding new work can mean rearranging the whole household.

Company announcements seldom say this out loud, but not everyone can absorb a sudden job loss equally. Moving a central team is efficient for the business. For a parent juggling school runs and fixed shifts, being 'redeployed' is often not a real option.

Jobs That Emigrate

For decades, New Zealand workers, skilled and semi-skilled, have crossed to Australia for better pay and more openings. That was always a personal decision. Here, the job is the thing that moves, whatever the worker wants. That makes offshoring look less like a spreadsheet exercise and more like a quiet form of labour migration driven by the employer. The work changes country, and the worker must choose: follow it, retrain or leave the workforce.

A Tough Market to Land In

The timing adds pressure. New Zealand's unemployment rate sits at 5.6%, so staff who lose these roles are not walking into a market hungry to take them on.

Still Open for Feedback

Nothing is final yet. Consultation runs to September 15, and Woolworths could change the size of the closure based on what it hears. The union has also raised a second worry: service quality. If support is run from Australia, New Zealand customers could end up speaking to agents without the local and regional knowledge that the current remote, NZ-based team brings.

The Lesson for South Africans Abroad

If you are planning to work in New Zealand from South Africa, or weighing up Australia instead, this story is a useful reminder. Labour mobility now runs both ways: companies move roles, and people move in response. Work that can be done from anywhere can also be moved anywhere. Hands-on skills that need someone on site, as many trades do, are much harder to send across a border, so keep that in mind as you plan.
