Woks firing, sauces made from scratch and every plate matching the last one: that is the standard for this Asian Chef role with an established hospitality group in Nelson, at the top of New Zealand's South Island.
The group wants a cook who can prove genuine skill in professional food preparation and who knows that quality comes from reliable prep, accurate recipes, teamwork, food safety and attention to detail.
The kitchen is structured, and there is support for building your skills and a long-term career. Sponsorship is available for eligible candidates. If you cook Asian cuisine professionally in South Africa or elsewhere, have menus or references ready that show it.
Key Responsibilities
- Cook Asian dishes to set recipes and standards, showing real command of Asian cooking techniques and prep
- Plan and organise each day's prep and cooking, and coordinate preparation work
- Help with menu planning and with estimating food and labour costs
- Check every dish for quality, consistency, portion size and presentation
- Make sauces, prep ingredients and get other components ready for service
- Order food supplies and manage them to suit kitchen needs
- Use commercial ovens, grills and other cooking equipment, keeping the right cooking temperatures and food handling standards
- Apply hygiene and food safety procedures every shift
- Cook with special dietary needs in mind
- Raise kitchen issues and prep concerns with management, and report quality problems with practical suggestions
- Work closely with the kitchen and floor teams during the day
- Show other staff the right cooking methods and techniques, and help train kitchen team members when required
- Help with preserving, freezing and storing food where required
- Keep the kitchen clean, organised and running efficiently
Requirements & Eligibility
- Relevant formal cookery qualification and/or a minimum of three years relevant professional experience
- Demonstrated professional experience cooking Asian cuisine, with genuine hands-on skill you can show
- Knows how a commercial kitchen operates
- Can reproduce dishes to set recipes every time, holding quality and presentation standards
- Understands food hygiene, food safety and safe kitchen practice
- Fits into a structured, high-performing team and follows instructions, procedures and kitchen systems
- A sharp eye for detail

- Communicates clearly with managers and co-workers
- Stays calm and productive through busy services
