Planner/ Architectural Draftsperson

Picture a house in Rockdale damaged by a fire, a fallen tree or a car through the front wall. Someone has to measure what is left, draw it properly and get the redesign through council. That is a big part of this job.
A multidisciplinary NSW consultancy that is still growing wants a Planning / Architectural Draftsperson with solid technical skills, a sharp eye for detail and real project experience. Alongside drafting, you will handle planning paperwork, DA preparation, portal lodgements and coordination with consultants.
You get proper responsibility from day one. As you prove yourself and the business grows, the role can develop into a senior or lead position. Keep a few drawing sets from past projects ready to show.
Key Responsibilities
- Measure existing residential and medium-density buildings on site and turn those conditions into accurate, detailed architectural drawings
- Draw up preliminary plans and help pick out structural elements in the architectural set
- Write Statements of Environmental Effects and the other planning documents a project needs
- Check each job against the relevant LEPs, DCPs and development controls
- Put together Development Application packages, lodge them on the planning portal and follow each DA through to the end
- Pass information between designers and specialist consultants, including heritage, bushfire, stormwater, structural, civil, surveying and arboricultural experts
- Produce clean 2D AutoCAD drawings in model and paper space, sticking to the office drafting standards on every set
- Review drawings and documents for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and sort out technical or documentation problems quickly
- Talk through project needs with clients, consultants and the rest of the team
- Plan your own workload and hit the deadlines agreed for each project
- Bring practical ideas and help improve how things are done as the consultancy expands
- Keep documentation of existing buildings precise from first measure to final issue
Requirements & Eligibility
- Demonstrated experience in architectural drafting, planning or a related professional field
- Proven proficiency in 2D AutoCAD, plus a strong grasp of drafting standards and drawing office procedures
- Hands-on experience drawing existing buildings, with the ability to read measurements and existing site conditions accurately
- Understanding of how residential and medium-density architectural documentation is put together
- Experience preparing or supporting Development Applications
- Knowledge of NSW LEPs, DCPs and planning requirements
- Experience with planning documents such as Statements of Environmental Effects
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong skills in analysing information and solving technical problems
- Able to coordinate well with several consultants at once
- Strong organisation and time management
- Able to own your assigned work and operate with limited supervision
- Professional written and verbal English communication skills, and the ability to deal effectively with clients and project stakeholders
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe applications
- Relevant qualifications and/or substantial practical industry experience; experienced architectural drafters are encouraged to apply
